4/25/2011 … CLASS NEWS Dee … So good to hear from you.

Send us pictures and information about your upcoming CD.  Nan Heintzelman Wells keeps the website updated and your singing career and  the groups you are in is the type of information she would want to post.

We would  love to have a copy  of one of your CD's

When you come to Salina let us know and we will get a group together for lunch.  We usually have a good group at lunch and it is a good way to pass on information.  We always share any correspondence we receive.

Enjoy your grandson, some of us have grown grandkids, time goes by so fast

Keep in touch. Be sure to let us know about a Salina trip, only an hour away so it would be easy to find a location for lunch.  All good wishes on your Birthday.  Judy [Judy Burnett Goodson]

4/25/2011 … CLASS NEWS  – I could be there…that's my b-day! [April Out to Lunch Bunch Occasion]  Hello to all. maybe I'll surprise you one day and show up.  No family left in Manhattan but in-laws in Salina so I come home every now and then.   I retired in June.  Love being with my 19 month old grandson, my only one, and performing.  I stay busy singing jazz.  I'm a solo performer but also sing in a trio called "Ala Carte" and an Arican-American ACAPPELLA sextet called "Sankofa".  We just received a grant to do a CD.  Hopefully we will start on it this summer.  Don't know why I'm telling you all this, guess I just want to stay connected to home. Have fun, Delores (Dee) Nichols Brown

Thank you for all your support.  Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.   Requi McDonald

11/28/2010 …  NEW ENTRIES  CLASS NEWS What a good looking group of MHSers!!!!! Linda Estes Pears

11/28/2010 …  NEW ENTRIES  CLASS NEWS You did a wonderful job again, Nan.  Enjoyed the "lunch Bunch" items and nice to have our Colorado included.  Thanks to Tausca for helping to keep us in touch! Victoria Kendall Seighman

11/9/2010 …  NEW ENTRIES … CLASSMATE TRIBUTES I was very sorry to hear of Richards passing.  It sounds like he led a very full and happy life.  He will be missed. Linda Estes Pears

11/9/2010 …  NEW ENTRIES … CLASSMATE TRIBUTES Richard had carried with him for 51 years the story of comforting Jean VanValkenburg as she lay injured in a wrecked car and her life ebbed away. In verifying and clarifying his memories, I had occasion to talk with him on the telephone in 2008. He struck me as a gracious, religious person who was proud of his achievements in the service and most proud of his family. His life was a credit to our class and I am sure he will be missed by all who knew him.  Kathy Bryson Pizar

3/2/2010 …  NEW ENTRIES … THINKING OF YOU It is with great sadness that we have said goodbye to another MHS 1958 classmate with the passing of Doris Self Conley.  Nan Wells

2/23/2010 …  NEW ENTRIES … THINKING OF YOU Nan, Amy's letter is wonderful and we all owe Kathy a great thank you for sending the news of all the classmates to Doris.  I was sorry that I was out of town when she came through Manhattan with Karen and I missed them when they were at Ruth Gladow Screen's house.  I remember Doris as a smart and self-confident girl and as a teenager, busy in my own world, I didn't know that hers contained so much trouble and pain.  For that I am sorry.  I'm glad Doris has Amy and her sister with her – she has a wonderful family.  Posting the letter would be very nice for the class.  Thanks for sending it to us – and thank you very much to Amy for writing. Janet  Krider Duncan

2/23/2010:

What a very special and loving letter of a daughter speaking of her mom.  Amy, how special it will be if our children love us as much and are as devoted to us as you and your sister are to your mother.  Your letter update is terribly moving … so heart rendering to see a classmate put up such a heroic battle to go on in a battle with, I guess, un surmountable odds.  I wish we could hug your Mom, in person, to help her fight that battle but I am so glad that Kathy's card did it one night for us.  There truly are angels among us!!! Nan Heintzelman Wells

Subject: From Doris (Self) Conley's daughter, Amy Wimmer (February 23, 2010)

As Karen wrote in the update, shortly after my mom's visit to Manhattan in October we discovered that the lung cancer my mom had been battling since October of 2008 had moved to her brain. She was diagnosed with 6 small brain tumors that her oncologist tried to aggressively treat in December with radiation. After 6 radiation treatments (out of 15) Doris nose dived and getting her to treatment became impossible for me and my sister Sonya. We started hospice on Christmas day. My mom is in a hospital bed here at home and either my sister or I have been with her around the clock since then.

Since that day my mom has been up and down and continues (in true Doris style) to be a fighting survivor of this terminal disease. Some days are certainly better than others but today was an especially good day here in Tempe, Arizona. Before bedtime tonight I opened Kathy's card and sat next to my mom as I read the update about each of you. You'll be happy to hear that as I read each of your names my mom nodded that she remembered each and every one of you. At the end of the updates she drifted peacefully to sleep with a happy expression and a small smile on her face.

After my mom's trip to Manhattan in October we spent an entire day rehashing her life all the way through childhood. She had a rough childhood but the memories of her dear friends from Manhattan put a silver lining to every dark cloud. I was especially fond of her recalling the dear friendship she formed with Karen and her family and my sister and I are grateful that she had a friend to see her though rough times at the end of high school and beyond. Thank you Karen from the bottom of our hearts.

My mom continues to beat all odds and leaves the hospice nurses with shaking heads after each incline of this roller coaster we are all on. I will tell you that I have never in my life met a woman so courageous and strong as my mom. Just when you think it can't get any worse my mom will greet you with a coherent expression of understanding when you enter the room. She is and always will be my role model and best friend.

Both of Doris's parents are still living. Her father Huber still lives in Manhattan and just turned 96 and her mother lives in Northern California and will be 93. When the time comes, she will be buried in our family plot in Bristow, Oklahoma and will be surrounded by many members of our beloved family.

Thank you for all your love and support and god bless you and your families.  Amy Wimmer

9/17/2009 … Kathyl, Thanks for the news.  I've always remembered Chuckie Frankenfeld, too.  He had a large personality.  He told the story of having once been lost in the big Marshall Field's store in Chicago as a child until his mother found him.  I had never been in a big department store (that I remembered) like he described. …  He was a very vivid boy and I've wondered what became of him. Janet Krider (Duncan)

9/17/2009 ... Hi, Janet and Nan, I forgot to mention that I noticed an In Memoriam in the K-Stater for Chuck Frankenfeld. He died in Larned, May 5 and was a professor of social work at Fort Hays State U. and a social worker at Larned State Hospital.  Like Nan, Chuck was a very special friend from my childhood. And it is odd that I remember his disposition and smile, almost more than all board and card games we played and outside neighborhood running games with Dave Ferguson and Fred Bright. From the Great Bend Tribune. The funeral home tributes speak of his playing Santa Claus, but no meniton of a wife; divorce perhaps.

Chuck Frankenfeld 1940 – 2009

LARNED — Chuck Frankenfeld, 68, died May 5 at Promise Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson. He was born June 27, 1940, at Manhattan, the son of Justus Carl and Margaret W. Weege Frankenfeld. A 1958 graduate of Shawnee Mission High School, he received his degree in sociology from Kansas State University in 1962 and his master’s in social work from the University of Kansas in 1964. He was a professor of social work at Fort Hays State University and a social worker at Larned State Hospital. In 1993 he received the Social Service Provider of the Year award from the University of Kansas and in 2008 he rece ived the Social Worker of the Year honor from Larned State Hospital.
Survivors include two daughters, Beth Akins and husband Chris of Hutchinson and Kim Luke and husband Jeff of Salt Lake City, Utah; a brother, John, of Howell, N.J.; a sister, Gay Gauch of Tampa, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Wyatt and Colby Akins and Jason and Jessie Luke. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of life gathering will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Larned. In care of Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, memorials in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Chuck Frankenfeld Memorial Fund for a tree and bench to be placed on the state hospital lawn, or for the Pawnee County Humane Society or the Larned Public Library. Personal condolences may be sent to www.elliottmortuary.com.

6/2009 … E-MAIL RESPONSES to Judy etc. regarding the up and coming quarterly luncheon to be held July 7 at the Vista Drive-In

- Sounds like lots of fun and would love to join you too.  I feel very lucky here in Colorado too especially after I got a phone call from Tausca not long after we came to Colorado for a lunch get together.  Reminds me, we need to do it again here.  Enjoy and I loved seeing Janet when she was here plus happy she arrived home again in good shape (she didn't like the bumpy flight) !  Have a wonderful lunch and please no more tornados for any of us.

We had a small one not long ago too.  Until our next reunion or sooner if anyone heads to Colorado! Vicky Kendall (Seighman)

m

- Wish I was in Manhattan to join you guys for lunch.  Have fun and say Hi to everyone for me. Don Leffingwell

m

Judy, It would be such fun to join you all, but this summer is pretty crazy for me. How about a recording or video? At least some pictures? Really enjoy them. Cheers, Molly Hoover (Hedrick)

m

- Thanks for the message and wish I was close enough to attend.  But, I cannot open the attachment, I have wordperfect, if you can send it in that format or if I can open it with adobe.  Thanks and again it was good to hear from you. Melanie Page (Jensen)

m

- Thanks, Judy.  For some reason this web site has missed me before.  It's great.  Wish I could "drop in" on the July 5 get together, but the trip from Oregon would be a little much!  Several of us have had 3 mini reunions.  (Rocky Mtns., San Antonio, and Oregon Coast.) One of these days I'll send in some pictures from them.  (probably after I move in Sept. – think they are all packed at this point)  Linda Williams Burton was at all of them – she should have some pictures also.  Suzanne Webster

m

- Hi Judy,  Wonder if you could add Larry and me to the 50th anniversary page.  We celebrated our 50th, May 29, 2008, which means we've already passed our 51st!  How time flies when you're having fun. Hope to see you at Vista, July 7th.  Thanks. Verlee West (Fronce)

6/16/2009 … CLASSMATE HOBBIES and INTERESTS - MANHATTAN GARDEN TOUR 2009 "A SUCCESS" Duncan Garden on the Tour Thanks for posting the pictures – I wish you could post the sweet smell. Our son Mike is the other gardener with me, building the stone walls and doing a lot of landscape planning and maintenence. Although when I say “planning,” Mike summed up our approach by quoting the Red Queen to Alice in Alice in Wonderland, “Start at the begining, go through until the end, then stop.” We figure when we stop, we may be back at the beginning with nature taking over again, but that’s OK, too. Janet Krider (Duncan)

6/12/2009 … TRIBUTES (JACK COWAN) Hi, interest post. I’ll write you later about few questions! Jane Radriges

I think we were blessed to grow up in MHS and Manhattan. We had dedicated teachers and our class was small enough that we all knew each other. Even though I left so many years ago, I have fond memories of Manhattan.
